Common Signs of Roof Damage

Most homeowners don’t look at their roof on a regular basis. We all know we spend most of our time taking care of the inside of our house and landscaping that is more eye level. However, it is important to look at your roof on a regular basis to scan for potential damage that could cause problems for your home. Here are some common signs of roof damage to help you keep your home safe.

1. Curled, Cracked or Missing Shingles

If your roof is made out of asphalt shingles it is easy to see if any of your shingles are curled, cracked or missing. These are signs that the lifespan of your shingles are quickly coming to an end. Make sure to call for a roof inspection to see if this can be fixed by a quick repair or by replacing the entire roof.

2. Dark, Wet or Dirty Shingles

If you notice that a part of your roof has some darkening shingles get it checked out! Water could be getting trapped under the shingles that will then cause a leak to happen in your walls and ceilings. If you see this early warning sign call a roofer! Taking care of a leak before it gets into the ceiling can help save money from further damage.

3. Shingle Granules in Gutters

Have you ever cleaned out your gutters and noticed something that looked like dark coarse sand? This is a sign that your shingles are wearing down and getting old. Composite and asphalt shingles start to shed granules over time or when damaged by hail.

4. Wear and Tear Around Objects and Openings

Wear and tear around chimneys, pipes, vents and other objects on your roof is where you will see initial deterioration. You can often fix these problem areas and keep the damage confined.

5. Blistering or Peeling Paint

If your attic has been poorly ventilated, humidity and moisture can build up right near the roofline, causing your exterior paint to peel or blister.

6. Staining on Interior Ceilings or Walls

Water stains or discoloration on your ceilings is never a good sign. This is caused by moisture entering the underlayment of the roof and coming into the house. If this is happening you could have a leak in your roof and will need a full roof replacement.

7. Sagging Roof Deck

If you notice your roof sagging downwards, you could have a water leak that is causing damage to your decking or rafters. So a couple times a year when you pull down those Holiday decorations, don't forget to take a look at the roof! Check to see if you have any sagging in the wood.

8. Outside Light in the Attic

While we are talking about those Holiday decorations, don’t forget to check for any sunlight coming into your attic while you are putting them away. If you can see light coming into your attic, water will be able to come through that same opening.
